Getting Ahead for a Stress-Free Back-to-School Season

Summer has a way of making us feel like time has slowed down. The long days, poolside lounging, spontaneous getaways, and slower routines give moms a much-needed pause from the school-year hustle. But as July nears its end and Target aisles begin to fill with notebooks and backpacks, that familiar thought creeps in: “Back to school is just around the corner.”

If you’re like many moms, the idea of back-to-school prep still feels weeks (or even months!) away. But what if we reframed this moment not as a disruption to summer, but as an opportunity? A chance to set up your home and your routines to make the transition smoother, less chaotic, and dare I say—even enjoyable?

In this post, we’ll explore how small steps you take now can create a calmer, more organized start to the school year. No stress. No last-minute Amazon orders. Just smart, simple systems that give you peace of mind and a head start.

The Mental Shift: From Summer Fun to Light Planning

No need to cancel your beach days. But, carving out a little time each week to prepare for the upcoming school season can work wonders. The key is to think of it as layering, not replacing, your summer rhythm.

• Start by imagining what a stress-free first week of school would feel like. What would your mornings look like? What routines would already be in place?*

Once you know the feeling you’re aiming for, you can reverse-engineer the steps you’ll need to take to get there. Begin with the areas that will have the biggest impact: your home, your calendar, your mindset.

Reset High-Traffic Spaces First

Before you buy a single school supply, turn your attention to the spaces that support your family life.

1. The Kitchen: Launchpad for the Day

• Declutter pantry staples, such as lunch snacks, cereals, and containers.
• Designate zones: one for lunch-packing supplies, one for grab-and-go breakfast items.
• Restock essentials: think reusable sandwich bags, water bottles, thermoses, and lunchboxes.

Tip: Add a small bin in the fridge for each child’s lunch items so you can grab and pack easily.

2. Entryway or Mudroom: Back-to-School HQ

• Install or refresh hooks for backpacks, jackets, and lunch bags.
• Add a shoe rack or cubbies to control entryway clutter.
• Place a clipboard or whiteboard near the door to track upcoming activities and school notices.

3. Study Zone or Homework Station

• This doesn’t have to be fancy. A corner with good lighting, a drawer with supplies, and a comfy chair will do.
• Sort through leftover supplies from last year and toss what’s broken or dried out.
• Set up supply caddies or a rolling cart so kids know where everything lives.

Organize and Inventory School Supplies Early

The earlier you start, the more intentional (and less expensive) your school shopping will be.

• Check last year’s backpacks, lunch bags, and pencil cases to see what can be reused.
• Create a digital or printable supply checklist for each child.
• Keep a running list on your phone for any “just in case” items.

By getting ahead now, you’ll avoid the mid-August panic and can take advantage of early sales.

Bonus Tip: Keep extras like glue sticks, folders, and erasers in a labeled bin for mid-year replenishments.

Sync the Family Calendar Now

Between school meetings, extracurricular activities, and weekend playdates, family life can become overwhelming quickly. Start building your family’s rhythm now.

• Input all known dates into a shared digital calendar (like Google Calendar) or your paper planner.
• Include back-to-school nights, sports tryouts, dental appointments, and first-day info.
• Use a large monthly wall calendar or chalkboard so everyone in the family can see the week ahead.

Don’t forget to block out buffer days during the first few weeks of school when everyone’s adjusting. Avoid overcommitting in the first two weeks.

Revisit Sleep and Morning Routines

You don’t need to launch into a full 6 AM wake-up next week, but slowly easing your family into school-year sleep schedules makes a big difference.

• Start by moving bedtime 15 minutes earlier every few nights.
• Reinstate calming routines before bed: reading, low lights, no screens.
• Practice “school day mornings” 1-2 weeks before the first day. Get up, eat breakfast, and get dressed as if it were a school day.

These “dress rehearsals” can help kids (and adults!) feel more in control and less anxious.

Declutter and Donate Before the New Rush

Back-to-school season often brings an influx of “stuff”: papers, projects, clothing, gear. Make room now.

• Have your kids try on clothes and shoes to see what fits.
• Donate or sell items they’ve outgrown.
• Go through school papers and artwork from last year: keep a few treasures, recycle the rest.

Create a donation station near the front door or laundry area and keep it active all month.

Think Beyond the Supplies: Emotional Prep for Kids

Even kids who love school can get nervous as it approaches. Use this time to support their emotional readiness.

• Talk openly about their feelings: What are they excited about? Nervous about?
• Revisit favorite books or stories about school.
• If they’re starting a new school or grade, drive by or walk the campus so it feels more familiar.

Let them help with the organizing and shopping so they feel more in control and part of the process.

Use Printables and Systems That Make It Easy

Systems don’t have to be complicated to be effective. A few intentional printables can bring clarity to the chaos.

Consider using:

• A weekly meal planner
• A command center checklist
• A school supply tracker
• A back-to-school countdown or prep timeline

These checklists can live on your fridge, inside a kitchen cabinet, or as part of your paper planner.

Let’s have a Smooth Back-to-School Season

When I was a student, one of the things that got me most excited about going back to school was shopping for new school supplies. I loved the look, feel, and smell of brand-new notebooks and notepads, colorful pens, fun pencil holders and organizers, and shiny new clips and binders. The thought of using new school supplies always added to the excitement of going back to school.

Inspired by those cherished memories, and now as a mother of three boys who have all grown and flown the nest to college, I’ve crafted “Your Ultimate Back-to-School Supply Guide.” This blog post captures the joy and excitement of finding just the right items to kick off the school year, whether for your kids or perhaps to indulge your love for beautiful stationery.

Now more than ever, there’s a dizzying array of options for school supplies. It can be tempting to buy anything and everything that you find cute or cool, but it’s best to stick to the simple and the basic.

Going back to school is also an excellent opportunity to teach kids how to get organized. When you’re out shopping, help your kids pick out items that make the learning experience fun and productive.

I’m sure your school provided you with an essential list of what your child will need, so here are some school supplies to help you and the kids get organized both at home and in school:

It’s never too early to start teaching kids the value of organization. Introducing them to simple and effective organizing tools sets them up for success in their academic journey.

Planners and organizers are for more than just adults. Kids need this, too, to keep track of important dates, project deadlines, school events, and the like.

When they write things down in a calendar, they learn to be organized—a life skill they will appreciate later.

Digital or traditional, it’s never too early to start teaching kids the value of organization. Keeping track of important dates, project deadlines, and school events is crucial.

Organizing Work & Time

Returning to school means accumulating papers and other school documents for you and your kids.

Help your kids get organized by having them use file folders efficiently. Teach them how to manage files, label the folders, and neatly organize them in a visible and easy-to-reach spot in their room. If there’s a place in their room for all files, they can line up the file folders with labels so it’s easier for them to use what they need at any time.

You’ve probably seen them all – flash drives of all shapes, sizes, and designs. Flash drives are a must-have for every student, from food to superheroes to geometric styles. Make storing files fun for your kids with fun, funky flash drives of their choice.

To avoid losing these small gadgets, attach them to a keychain or keep them in a gadget organizer.

To avoid clutter in your kids’ study desks, teach them how to organize using tray organizers.

Tray organizers with compartments enable your kids to separate their school supplies, helping to keep their desks tidy.

Tray organizers are great tools for productivity—you save time looking for supplies when they’re all neatly arranged in one place.

Reading new books and materials is one of the best things about returning to school.
As a kid struggling with numbers, I loved poring over my recommended reading books and learning new languages.

Keep highlighters handy to make studying and reading more fun. Removable flags and sticky notes will help your kids write notes and stay organized inside their books and textbooks without having to write on the book pages.

Highlighters now come in various colors, so it’s always fun to pick your favorites to make studying a more “colorful” experience!

Once school begins, there will be a lot of paper, so binders and folders are a must-have.

Additionally, to prevent your child from carrying all the weight unnecessarily, I suggest creating a filing system by color using folders and binders.

The folders stay in your child’s backpack and are used as a form of “mail.” As the paperwork comes home, file it in the binder of the respective color.

This is the same system I used in college, keeping all my notes organized by subject and minimizing the weight in my bag.

Organizing the Work

Folders

Organize the papers that come to and from school by assigning a color to each subject folder. For example:

• The blue folder for English
• Orange folder for Science
• Green folder for Math
• Red folder for Spanish, and so on.

Binders

At home, replicate the color system you created for your folders with binders. Following what we did with the folder above, you’ll have:

• The blue binder for English
• Orange binder for Science
• Green binder for Math
• Red binder for Spanish, etc.

Create sections within each binder for tests, written projects, and other relevant materials.

Consider adding a portfolio case or filing box for thicker documents, such as project reports and essay collections.

To avoid piles of artwork and projects, digitize the best work as the year passes. At the end of the year, you can recycle everything, knowing you already saved what you like most.

As an adult, I couldn’t live without Post-its. Your kids can also use this nifty invention in school to remind them of tasks or assignments. Post-its are also great for writing down inspiring or motivational reminders!

They can post these on their books, desks, notebooks, and other school supplies to remind them to do great work!

I particularly love these transparent sticky notes for studying and keeping my notes inside my books.

 I love Bento boxes because they have food compartments that allow you to provide a variety of choices for your kids, and you can put everything in one place.

Bento lunch boxes make packing your kids’ lunch fast and easy, helping to prevent spills. Without needing multiple containers for soups, desserts, or sauces, bento lunches are an excellent way for kids to eat and go!

It’s lunch time!

These days, functional gadget organizers are a must-have for kids’ bags to prevent clutter. With a good tech organizer, you can keep all your gadgets, such as tablets, laptops, and smartphones, secure and organized.

They provide an excellent storage solution for chargers, flash drives, earphones, and other gadgets. With a trusty gadget organizer, they won’t have to fumble through their bags for the needed gadgets!

Portable Chargers – Ensure devices are always ready for use, a must-have in today’s digital learning environment.

In today’s bustling world, the right environment can significantly enhance students’ ability to concentrate and absorb information.

Noise-canceling headphones are a perfect back-to-school accessory. They are especially beneficial for students who are easily distracted by background noise or have sound sensitivities. These headphones help create a personal oasis of quiet, making it easier to focus on studies and homework.

Whether studying in a noisy cafeteria or at home with siblings playing around, noise-canceling headphones can boost concentration and productivity.

As students load up on textbooks, notebooks, and tech devices, the weight in their backpacks can quickly add up, potentially straining their backs and shoulders.

Making the Most of Your First Year

As our twin sons closed their freshman year at college, I can say we all learned a thing or two about college choices and college life here at home. While they did well, learning to be away from home and manage life in the “real world” didn’t come without minor bruises for all of us.

A Whole New World

Though they share the same name, freshman year of high school and freshman year of college are vastly different creatures. As a freshman in high school, you’re probably moving from one school in your hometown to another slightly larger one with more challenging classes and maybe a vending machine or two.

As a freshman in college, it can feel like your whole world has turned upside down.

You’re likely living away from home for the first time in an unfamiliar city full of strange people and places. If that sounds a bit terrifying, don’t worry; you’re not the only one to think so. Luckily, this feeling doesn’t last long. You’ll quickly grow to make new friends, find new favorite places, and feel right at home at your new school.

Here are some tips on getting settled into your freshman year of college life and making the most of it. 

Get Comfy in a New Routine

Humans are creatures of habit, and when in a new place, these habits can help you feel comfortable even in new places. Think back on your high school routine; did you work out every day or visit the same coffee shop on your way to or from class?

You can likely create something similar in your new life as a college freshman. Ask one of your dorm’s RAs if any gym facilities are available to students or good trails for running.

Look for new coffee shops to try when you’re walking to and from your new classes.

Having a college life routine that somewhat resembles the one you’re familiar with will help you feel less like an outsider in a new place, even if you are. Once you get comfortable, you can add new things to your routine or change it completely to fit your new class schedule if needed.

Part of turning this new environment as familiar as possible is creating a comfy and welcoming dorm room. Pay attention to what you love the most about your bedroom at home and try to replicate it where you can.

It can be the way your desk is set up, how you keep your closet organized, or even the sheets in your bed. Try to recreate as much as you can in your new space.

COLLEGE DORM FAVORITES

Join a Club or Three

Student organizations are the fastest way to find people who enjoy the same things you do, making finding friends quick and easy work. Many schools will have a student org fair at the beginning of each semester where you can browse the various clubs and groups operating on campus and put your name down for one or two.

Having club meetings on the calendar will give you something to look forward to in college life other than your regularly scheduled classes and, of course, the weekend.

They can also introduce you to new opportunities to advance in your field or try out new hobbies and areas of interest that might not align with your major.

For example, if you’re studying architecture, volunteering with Habit For Humanity can be a great way to acquire skills related to your field while meeting like-minded people. Planning on going into engineering but fascinated by filmmaking? There’s sure to be a video production student org on your campus that would love to have you!

Make Time For What’s Important

It’s easy to fall into a routine of eating junk food out of the vending machines and staying up late playing video games with the other people on the floor, but that’s not going to keep you throughout an entire year of school.

Get out your planner and look at the gaps in your schedule between club meetings and classes; do you see an hour when you can hit the gym? Do you have a class near a dining hall where you can get a real meal for once? Can you think of anywhere you can sit outside and study for a few minutes before heading back inside to stare at your laptop for a few more hours?

You don’t have to devote hours of your days to self-care to keep yourself happy and healthy. A little exercise here, a nap there, healthy snacks every so often, and time to relax are more than enough to keep you in good shape throughout your entire first year in college.

You can even keep playing video games all night with your friends as long as there’s some time on the schedule to catch up on zzzs later. You can also invite these friends to come with you to the gym if you need an exercise buddy or some social time. Who knows, maybe group workouts will become a fun part of your routine!

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

High school teachers love to frighten students by saying that college professors won’t have time to help them individually, but that doesn’t fly when you’re in college.

You’ll quickly find this to be completely false.

My sons got tons of help from their professors, who were more than willing to give them guidance during office hours (tip: make the most of it!) or via email over the weekends or breaks.

If you don’t understand something, have a question about a class, or want to say hi to your professor, head to office hours. Professors love seeing students taking the initiative to do well in their classes and will be more than willing to help you succeed.

Getting to know the experts in your field of study is also a great way to learn about opportunities to advance in your career path and get a feel for what professional life after college might look like.

For out-of-class issues, contact your counselors and dorm RAs; that’s what they’re there for.

Have a question about a class you want to take or are unsure what would fit best in your schedule? A quick conversation with a counselor can easily clear things up and put your mind at ease.

While the boys made good friends in their first year in college, it’s my perception that a lot of freshman year is going to feel lonely. But you have to remember that there is a whole campus of people around you who want you to succeed or are students who went through the same thing as you during their freshman years. Not to mention that you certainly have someone back home cheering for your well-being and your success. #youvegotthis
